Our Frightening Night

Last week we had quite a scare.

As we were getting ready for bed Monday night Edie came into our room with something in her mouth. Jus asked if I had given them denta bones and I said no, he grabbed the block out of her mouth and we discovered it was rat poison.

At some point as we were frantically putting everything away and trying to set up our kitchen someone put a box of rat poison blocks under the sink. Monday night Edie got bored and decided to open said box and play with said blocks. We were able to find 7 of the 8 blocks but could not find the last.

I immediately got online to see what we could do (at this point it was 2 am and the vet was long closed). I learned that Hydrogen Peroxide (to induce vomiting) followed by Vitamin K was our only hope, rat poisoning works slowly and symptoms of poisoning don't appear until 36 hours after ingestion, at this point Edie's internal organs would be bleeding and she would die quickly.

We took Edie into the bathroom, I held her mouth open led and Jus poured hydrogen peroxide down her throat, after trying this twice we realized we needed a syringe.

Jus walked the half block to the drug store when he got home, I squirted 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide down Edie's throat. She began throwing up and we began to look for bits of rat poison, finally she emptied her stomach and we had yet to see the turquoise colored rat poison.

Jus had talked to the vet at this point and the vet told him to get Edie to throw up and then bring her in in the morning.

We went to bed feeling ok about our girl, as we laid it bed I started to cry, it was 3:30 at this point and even though we hadn't seen any there was a good chance Edie had eaten rat poison.

It turns out Edie is ok, the vet did some blood work and they didn't find any poison, her liver & kidneys are working well and we're giving her Vitamin K supplements.

Obviously, I was incredibly worried about Edie the thing that struck me most about that night is how upset I was.

Edie & Layla are our girls.
We talk to them like we talk to each other, we scold them by talking rationally to them, Edie sits on our laps and they both like to spoon us in bed.

So how the heck am I going to be able to have kids? If I'm crying because my dog is throwing up how am I going to be able to handle having a child cry in the middle of the night?

I'm under the impression that mothers have the strength of a hundred women, my mother has always had much greater strength than I do and I hope that when we have kids I'll be able to be strong when they're sick, sad & hurt.

And if I don't, Jus is in for a wild ride.

Oh my gosh that sounds absolutely horrible.

A few months after we got Monte he got into the bathroom garbage and ate a Q-tip. We didn't know that's what happened but that night he started... well, for lack of better words, pooping blood. Like you, it was too late for the vet so we ended up staying up most of the night freaking out.

He eventually passed the Q-tip, which was broken, hence the blood. And he ended up being okay. But my gosh was that a horrible night, I totally feel you!

That is just awful! Thank god she is okay and everything worked out, but I'm sure you guys were so scared.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this! At least she is ok.. you guys are such good pet parents.

My one cat, Tegan, decide to try and eat a Plinko.. it's a little ball of chemical smelly stuff that you put down your garbage disposal so it doesn't smell bad. We didn't realize this until she was running around frantically and foaming at the mouth - I freaked, it was 9pm on a Sunday night, thought she had somehow mysteriously contracted rabies - until we found a deflated Plinko. It's SO scary, especially since 24hr emergency vet clinics are very few and far between. So I get it.. pets seriously are like children, in a good way!

I can relate to you, my little yorkie was very very sick he is only 5 pounds and was bleeding instead of actually going to the bathroom and throwing up until there was nothing left in his stomach, took him to an emergency vet where he stayed overnight and then had to take him to his regular vet the next morning, I didn't sleep, I didn't eat, I just cried and cried thinking I was going to lose him. The vet called and asked if we had any neighbors or someone that didn't like him because he had all the symptoms as if he would have ingested rat poison, thank god h made it through I would probably die if something ever happens to him he is like my child, I am so happy yours is better :)

What a terrible scare!!! So glad that shes ok. I think the same thing about having children because I know how emotional I get about things with our cat haha

Hope you have an awesome day to make up for a really crummy night!

well, i don't know what to tell you about the kids thing because babies really aren't my bag, but cole, my eyes got all watery and i wanted to cry thinking that something could have happened to edie! animals really aren't just pets, they're family members just like anyone else, so of course it's tough to see them in a vulnerable situation. i'm so glad she's okay!

Awe you guys. What a horrible night. I can understand why you were so upset. You guys are great parents. At least you know when things go crazy you can put your heads together and do the right thing, which is exactly what you did. Hope Edie is okay!

I am so happy that Edie is ok, those pictures of her are so sweet.
I have the same thoughts about children, since we already consider our animals our kids. But I am sure once the time comes, everything will be ok and you will find ways to deal with things as needed.
Maybe it would be easier if we could all just give birth to puppies instead of babies! ;)

I thought I would be the same way once we had kids but somehow you become stronger because you know that crying when things get rough isn't going to help them. I have a new found strength with Bennett...it's crazy!
I'm glad Edie is doing well, poor girl!

I am so glad your Edie is okay! I think my husband and I can totally relate to your situation in that we're 20-somethings in between being married and being married with kiddos. These dogs are our children and I don't know what we would do without them!

I'm the same way when it comes to my dog. One night, I came home and he was totally not himself. Not cuddling, not eating, nothing. I couldn't even eat dinner I was so worried about him! Our animals become our babies. :)

i know exactly what you mean! our dog is our LIFE; i can't imagine what our CHILDREN will be like.

and one time shiner, our mini schnauzer, ate some grapes and apparently that's bad for them and get him to drink some hydrogen peroxide (which he happily lapped up and then never vomited...) but everything worked out okay. but it's scary!

oh!!!!

i am so sorry you had to deal with that cole :(. poor edie! that must've been so scary. we've never had a scary situation like that with marley thankfully, but i can only imagine. i totally cry whenever craig even broaches the idea of marley not being around one day.

glad edie is ok!

Aw I'm so glad she's okay!! and when you become a mother, it's a completely different thing. You could be exhausted in the middle of the night, but you'd do anything for that child and you'll always have your husband there to support you!

So scary. Our dog ate bleach once, and we had to take her to the emergency vet and it was terrifying. I'm happy your furbaby is doing well.

Oh Poor baby! both of you! I am glad everything is Okay!

and I think as a mother it will be a bit better atleast when they are older because they'll be able to tell you somewhat what is wrong, where you have no idea what is going on with a dog

Awww sweet girl! Poor thing, I am so glad that she is okay. I can't imagine the feelings that you went through. The fact that you have the ability to care as deeply as you obviously do will make you a great mother!

I'm so glad that everything worked out in the end and that she's going to be okay. I can't imagine how scary that must have been, but you took action immediately which is the sign of a very good mum indeed :)

i recently had a scare with my cat, and i felt the exact same thing: how could i ever survive being a mom of actual human children?! but then i had a comforting thought: one of the bestest things about human kids is, at some point, children get old enough to express themselves verbally. so when something's wrong, they can tell you "my tummy hurts." or "now i'm feeling better." or "now i'm feeling worse." in many ways, having a pet is like having an infant for...forever. kids actually grow up ;)
