25

Today is St. Patrick's Day. It also happens to my parents 25th wedding anniversary.

Twenty five years ago my parents took their vows to love, honor & cherish each other and they have spent the past 25 years doing just that.
I spy a little baby Cole

My parents are a wonderful example of what it takes to make your relationship work. They work together all day, every day and when they go home they laugh, hug & kiss.

Over the years my mom has given me tons of advice but the advice she gives most often is on the importance of laughter in a relationship. She is a firm believer that laughter is the key to a good relationship and luckily my dad is wonderful at making her laugh.

In honor of my parents celebrating this momentous anniversary I thought I'd share their Real People in Love which I first posted last February.

How old are you and Nick?
I'm 50 and Dad is 55.

What are your occupations?
Restaurant owners (Note from Cole:VERY SUCCESSFUL restaurant owners, they were on Food Network!)

How did you meet?
Our families were both in the antiques business for years, my family had known your dad since he was a little boy. My mom and I were traveling from Florida to Texas for an antique show and on the way my mom told me that I was about to meet a boy that I would love, was she right! We were setting up the show and your father arrived. My mom called his name and he turned. When he first saw me he dropped his briefcase, it was so cute.
We spent a lot of time together that week. We found out we had a lot in common, we had dinner together every night after the show and my mother also loved him so it was fun and easy to get to know him. When the show was over we said our goodbyes. Two weeks later we met again at another antique show in Nashville. That's where the sparks really flew! (Ha) We had so much fun together! From then on we spoke daily on the phone, he was in Philadelphia and I was in Florida.
About a month after the Nashville show he flew to Florida and we drove a truck load to Dallas for my mother. The trip was supposed to take 2 days but it took us 5! The first day we didn't even get our of Florida! We stopped at a lot of bars and restaurants along the way. We had a great two weeks. We rode mechanical bulls and drank bottles of champagne by the year. We would go to lunch and come back 4 hours later after drinking vodka gimlets and stealing balloons from a bank, it was a crazy fun courtship!
It sealed the relationship and about 4 months later I moved to Pennsylvania and we've been together ever since.

How did you get engaged?
It was my birthday. I had to go on a scavenger hunt with clues that ended up in our bedroom, my gift, my ring, was under the mattress. Then Dad asked me to marry him.

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
We went to the justice of the peace, Dad bought me a bouquet. I was very nervous and shaking. It was wonderful.

Define Love:
It's caring and thinking about the other person's needs and wants. It's not selfish. It's doing special things like I love you gifts for each other.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
Putting up with things that the other person does that bug you.

What is the best part?
It's comfortable and secure being with someone so long. It's great knowing someone so well.

What is the best day you and Dad have had together?
The days you and your sister were born.
What makes you different from other couples?
We can work all day together and come home and still be loving and understanding. We spend so much time together and truly love it.

What is the most essential element of making it?
Patience, kindness, forgiveness, making each other laugh. If you say or do something that is painful to your partner apologize right away. You don't want to hurt each other.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
At this point in our life it's going to the lake to relax.

Do you have a song?
Jeffery Osbourne "Let's Spend the Night Together"

What are your hopes for the future?
For us all to be happy and live a long life together.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
The grass is not greener on the other side. It's a wonderful feeling growing old together.

To my parents,
Thank you for being so wonderful. Thank you for the example you have shown and for all that you do for Banan, Jus & me. You have set the standard high and I look forward to creating a marriage with Jus that has the same feeling as yours. You two are the best and I can't wait to celebrate the next 25 years with you!
Love,
Cole

The Happiest of Birthdays

Before I begin with today's post I want to thank you all for your wonderful comments yesterday. I was a little worried I'd get some posts calling me a bad puppy mom and blaming me for the unknown rat poison, but I have to tell you, your comments made me tear up all day. I appreciate your love & support and hope that I can make your day like you made mine yesterday.

Now, on to my regularly scheduled post...

Today my dad turns 55, if you add that together you get a 10, which my dad is.

Banan & I couldn't have asked for a better dad. My father is patient, fun & understanding. He never questions our desires or the girly things we do. He believes in us, understands us, and tries his hardest to understand our interests.

Dad, over the past year you have gone well beyond your daddy duties.
My dad got down at our reception!

You have gone wedding dress shopping, built flower boxes, sanded ceilings & walls, and walked me down the aisle to Jus. You supported my crazy wedding ideas (well, mostly), supported our crazy house purchase and kept smiling through it all.

Thank you for asking about Jus every morning, for the help you have given us and the unconditional love you give Mom, Banan, Jus & me.

As we've said all along, you'll never loose me as your little girl, you've only gained your first son. Thank you for all that you do and all the ways you make my life better.

Happy Birthday, Dad!
I love you!

Roundup: Things for Yo' Daddy

Thanks for the sweet comments yesterday. Jus & I cooked dinner together last night and then went to his parents for some birthday cake (it was Jus's little brother's birthday). As it turns out Jus & I picked the same card for each other, I think it's a sign we're meant for each other.
I also have to brag a little about the awesome gift I got. Jus had his friend (who has professional equipment) record him singing/playing two songs for me. I wish I knew how to upload a song but trust me when I say it's the sweetest gift ever and I cried.

Speaking of gifts, Father's Day is coming up and if you're like me you're still trying to decide what to get. My dad is hard to buy for, he doesn't play golf, isn't a car guy and has just recently picked up fishing. We've been known to buy my dad some fun, playful gifts so hopefully we'll be able to think of something good for my dad.

Some Fierce Cuff links

I have to admit that my dad gets a lot of sweaters for presents

When I was little my dad had a 'stache

As I said, my dad doesn't play golf, but if he did this would be a must

This would be such a sweet gift for a first time father

I am not smart enough to figure this out, maybe your dad is

If your dad is like mine he isn't too much of a shopper so we try to help him out
Red Madras Shirt from Gap $39.50

My dad's shaving bag is almost as old as I am

I've always thought things like this look cool

So your dad can hold it all together

If dads could pick their own gift this might be it
Microbrew of the Month Club from $20.50 per month

Or if your dad is more of a wine drinker

One day Jus will be given one of these for Father's Day

Slightly gross to think about but very necessary

If my dad played golf I would want to give him this

For the baseball loving dad

My dad keeps talking about making a "bodacious" outside kitchen
Cooler Station from Target $149.99

Perfect for the BBQing Dad

Even more perfect for the BBQing Dad

Perfect for the father (or father of your children) with a sense of humor
Life Tie from Projector $30.00

What are you getting your dad for Father's Day?
