Real People in Love

I first started my Real People in Love series two years ago as part of a week long Valentine's Day celebration. The initial plan was to end the series after that first week but my readers loved the series as much as I did and I decided to continue.

In the last year I've slacked off but as part of this year's Valentine's Day celebration I'm reviving the weekly series and asking for participants. If you'd like to be featured as Real People in Love or have a blogger that you'd love to see featured send me an email at nicolekblehman@gmail.com.
Jus & me during our first look,
because I haven't shown you nearly enough of our wedding pictures
and because I really love my baby daddy.

And be sure to check out the archives to read over some wonderful stories & advice from past Real People in Love I've featured.

Real People in Love: Jee-Young & David

I was so excited when Jee-Young from Conventional Bliss emailed me about participating in Real People in Love. Jee-Young is someone who I've met through Twitter and I laughed as I read her responses because Jee-Young and her husband, David's, story lines up with Jus & mine.

How old are you and David?
I am 27 and David is 29.

How long have you been together?
We've been married for 9 months and together for 4 years.

When's your anniversary?
Our dating anniversary is January 28, 2007 and our wedding anniversary is September 18, 2010.

What are your occupations?
By day- I am a proposal writer at a global HR firm and David is a bank manager. By night- we are both struggling grad school students.

How did you meet?
David and I met at my first "real-life" job. We both grew up and lived in the same hometown all of our lives, but didn't meet one another until we were working in a town an hour or so away. It was a 100% commission, cold-calling sales job at a private investment firm. Needless to say, I only lasted 6 months and made one decent paycheck. David was my indirect manager and I always joke around with him that he was so into me that he broke the corporate dating policy. Haha, it was definitely fun and exciting, keeping everything a secret! He eventually left for a better opportunity and we always say that the best thing we got out of that company was each other!

How did you get engaged?
We feverishly looked at a million houses during summer of 2009. We finally found our dream house as summer was coming to a close. On August 24, we had our final walk-through at our first home.
Our realtor, Elizabeth, David and I (with my notebook and pen in hand) toured the house for any last minute details. Ironically, the master bedroom was the last room that we needed to check. As I came out of the master bathroom, David pulled me in next to him. I pushed him away out of embarrassment because I thought he was giddy about the house and I didn't want him to kiss me in front of Elizabeth, who was just a few feet away. But, he kept insisting and proceeded to say the most meaningful, heartfelt words I have ever heard in my life. I still didn't believe it was happening, even when he got down on one knee!
David planned for Elizabeth to video tape the entire proposal. I can almost guarantee you'll hear me say "OMG, babe, are you serious?" a few times before it actually sunk in. I was completely oblivious to his anxious state on our drive over to the house; and also to the fact that I was scrubbed out in a t-shirt and ripped jeans, while he was all put together.
All I remember is how happy I was; my face literally hurt the next day from smiling so much!

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
My heart smiles when I think back to our wedding day; relishing in the joyous day that was about us, our love and the support of our family and friends. Our day was perfect. And if it wasn't, I didn't know about it. From the morning shower (good luck!) to the beautiful sunny afternoon, I was elated with every part of the day. Our first look and ceremony were filled with tears of joy. It was definitely one of the most intimate moments we've shared in the history of our relationship. Our reception was filled with laughter and smiles. We spent all night dancing and celebrating our special day. It meant the world to us to share our day with so many family and friends. From up north to different states to my maternal grandmother who flew in from Korea, I am so thankful for the love and blessing of our family and friends. The only regret I have is not being able to make the day last longer. I wish I could live forever in the moment of officially becoming David's wife and forever roommate.

Define Love:
Love is selfless and patient. It's more than just a whimsical feeling, it's something that defines your actions and your words every day. It's something that makes you want to be the best version of you that is humanly possible.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
I think the toughest part of being in a committed relationship is learning how to openly communicate and compromise with one another. We are both individuals who think and act/react differently. We can't expect each other to read minds. It's the whole "selfless" factor of love. We're human beings, so it takes work to truly become selfless in our words and actions to one another.

What is the best part?
Do I have to choose one? I guess I can sum up all of it by saying that the best part of being in a committed relationship is having my best friend as my forever roomie in this crazy journey of life!

What is the best day you and David have had together?
Wow, that's a tough one. I could pick all of the vacations we've been lucky enough to go on together. But, in all honesty, I think the best day(s) we've had together are the ones where we steal away time to just be lazy and enjoy time with each other. We'll sleep in till noon, lay in bed cuddling, chatting, and laughing about this and that. Then we'll get up and cook breakfast for lunch. We'll play with our fur babies, Bailey & Buddy. Usually, we end up back in bed, fur babies in tow, watching a marathon of movies or one of our favorite TV shows (Modern Family, Simpsons, Criminal Minds, or anything on HGTV).

What makes you different from other couples?
I don't know what makes us different from other couples. All I know is that our love for each other isn't extravagant, it isn't perfect, and it isn't atypical. Our love is us, in our best reflection of God's unconditional love. We're just two people who love each other and find adventure in the everyday, conventional bliss we were lucky enough to have been blessed with in our lives.

What is the most essential element of making it?
I think the most essential element of making a marriage work is to acknowledge that it takes work and making the commitment to put in that work. David and I may not like each other every day; but, we do love each other every day. We have good days and bad, but both of us wake up knowing that we choose to make it work every day, because there is no one else we want to experience all of life's ups and downs with, but each other.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
David is obsessed with making to-do lists. We love to run errands all around town, playfully bickering over who gets to check off those never-ending tasks, and pat ourselves on the back for being productive on our time away from work. Whether it's grocery shopping or taking our fur babies to the dog park, doing the simplest of things together makes it that much more enjoyable.

Do you have a song?
We have too many to count. Our first dance song was "Until You" by Dave Barnes. We always joke that Chicago's "Glory of Love" from the Karate Kid 2 Soundtrack is our theme song. (Daniel San= David, Kumiko= me)

What are your hopes for the future?
For the immediate future, baby-making plans are set for 2012. I hope that we will be lucky enough to have happy, healthy children.
In the long run, I hope that as each day passes, we grow to love each more deeply, humbly and intimately that the first day we fell in love.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
Real love isn't always rainbows and butterflies. But with mutual nurturing through respect, commitment, and honesty; it is the most beautiful thing two people can grow together. So when it comes along your way, hold on tight, and don't ever let it go!

Real People in Love: Katie & E

This week's Real People in Love are the adorable Katie & E from LatteLove. I first "met" Katie through Weddingbee and in the time since I've had fun following along on Katie & E's adventures. (Right now they're in Italy for the summer!)

How old are you and E?
I'm 23 and E is 25.

How long have you been together?
We've been together for almost four years, and married for two of them.

When's your anniversary?
We got married on June 19, 2009

What are your occupations?
E is a graduate student in seminary and I work in graduate school admissions.

How did you meet?
We met through mutual friends in college. I was the geeky, young transfer student; E was the cool, funny smart guy. We were friends for a year before our first date.

How did you get engaged?
We were long-distance (Chicago to San Diego) for most of our relationship. About a year after we'd been dating, E flew out to Chicago without me knowing it and surprised me with a proposal on Navy Pier!
Check out more of their sweet proposal story here

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
One of the best things about our wedding day is that I was forced to give up many of my expectations about the perfect details, and just enjoy the event. Everything didn't happen the way I wanted it to, but those details fade quickly. What I want to remember about that day is how we felt so immensely supported and loved!
And beyond that, I don't know what could have been more fun-our best friends & family all in one place to celebrate us. It was absolutely the best party I've ever been to!
Find Katie's recaps here.

Define Love:
Love is a daily act of self-giving.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
The work! There were a lot of things I prepared myself for prior to marriage, but there's very little you can do to prepare for the amount of work, forgiveness and self-sacrifice that a healthy marriage requires. It's an every-single-day process on Day 1, Year 2 and Year 20!

What is the best part?
The intimacy. (And I don't just mean physical!) There is something about marriage that involves such closeness with your spouse... you know each other better than anyone else on earth. The secret jokes, the annoying habits, the looks- are all something you share with each other exclusively. That has been one of the most exciting parts of our marriage.

What is the best day you and Chris have had together?
Any Saturday when E is out of school! There's always a certain pressure during the year as E is studying in a very difficult program. When he is out of school, he is much more relaxed. On those days our favorite schedule is: sleeping in (9am is usually as long as we can make it!), make waffles together, read on our patio, watch a movie, hike, and meet up with friends for dinner.

What makes you different from other couples?
As much as I wish we could say "nothing!" I know that's not true. Right now E is a student in seminary, preparing to become a pastor. The student lifestyle can be crazy (and lead us to places like Italy for a summer!) and our life afterwards will be kind of unpredictable.

What is the most essential element of making it?
For us, it's knowing that our wedding vows are a promise first to God, then to each other. It motivates us to continue to pursue each other, love and forgive without a thought to whether or not we'll "make it." We promised we would, and we will.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
We really enjoy hiking together and going to Disneyland, but I think our favorite thing is to pull up two patio chairs and read next to each other.

Do you have a song?
Not really. It took us a long time to even figure our music we could compromise on listening to in the car! (Answer: Taylor Swift)

What are your hopes for the future?
For now? Get through E's last year of school! Other than that, I'd love to stay living in SoCal, but we are open to going wherever. We'd love to do more traveling. We also hope for a few bambinos in our (distant) future, both biological and adopted.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
It helps if you marry a really awesome person that you respect and admire.

Real People in Love: Suze & Shawn

In the year that I've been featuring Real people in Love I've learned tons about love in the real world and how to make a relationship work. I've featured people that are dating & couples that have been married for several years. I've learned that no matter how old or what the circumstance is everyone has relationship knowledge to pass on and it's usually a good idea to take that knowledge and run with it.
This week's Real People in Love is a couple who are closing in on ten years and have plenty to show for it. Suze is the woman behind Girl Wizard, where she blogs about her lovely life with Shawn and their daughter.

How old are you and Shawn?
Suze is 37, Shawn is 39.

How long have you been together?
9 years

When's your anniversary?
May 25

What are your occupations?
Shawn is a Senior Software Engineer, Suze is a novelist; both are full time parents.

How did you meet?
Shawn and I met when I was a freshman and he was a junior in college. He was the President of the Society of Physics Students and I was Vice-President. At the time, we were just friends with a ton of respect for one another.

How did you get engaged?
We went our separate ways for eight years but were "reintroduced" by a former Physics professor and mentor through email. We were living in two different cities at the time but Shawn pursued me with zeal. He flew into town every other weekend and it took us about six weeks after we were reintroduced to get engaged. I had never felt so desired! Shawn had just had his doctorate in Physics and had secured a very good job and I was working as an English and Theatre teacher at a private academy. He whisked me away to another city and another life--- it was all very whirlwind!

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
We actually married in the courts, first. We were engaged so it wasn't complete whimsy but we were in his apartment on April Fool's Day and he turns and says to me, "You wanna get married, tomorrow?" And I looked at him and said, "Why the hell not?" Best decision I ever made. Hands down. He went into work the next day and told his boss he was going to take off early because he was getting married.

Define Love:
When we were first engaged, Shawn wrote me several incredible letters-- by hand. In them, he wrote of love as being a decision you make every day. Experience has certainly borne that out. Every day of our marriage Shawn has been understanding, patient, quick to see the best in things, a protector-- even a mentor. The amount of respect and gratitude I feel for my husband simply has no bounds. There is a lot of hype surrounding infatuation, ardor, the kind of love one might do something crazy for. But the craziest thing a person can do for another is to love them quietly and faithfully-- every day-- through the endless Saturday morning brunches, oil changes, new water heaters, garage-door fiascoes (we recently had ours replaced,) making sure our daughter-- the apple of our eyes-- is fed, clothed, listened to and valued.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
In my opinion (Suze), the toughest part of being in a committed relationship is just growing the hell up. There comes a point in every marriage, no matter how good-- and believe me, I could not have married a more excellent man-- when you're forced to face all of the romantic, idealistic notions you fostered as a child. When you recognize them for what they are-- fantasy-- and then recognize the tremendous gift you've been given--reality--reconciling the two and coming out on the other end strengthened the bond between two people like little else.

What is the best part?
Crikey! How long is your program? :)
There are innumerable beauties to being in a committed relationship-- not the least of which is feeling safe, accepted. Fought for. I feel like, every day, Shawn goes out and fights for me and our daughter. And every night, he comes back to the haven we have created together and leaves the cares of the world at the door. Our home is incredibly stable and harmonious, and I think we have both made that a tremendous priority. We don't yell at one another, we don't insult one another. Over the years, we've fostered an unspoken rule of mutual respect and edification and, just like any habit, it's become second-nature.

What is the best day you and Chris have had together?
I did not want a C-section. In my imagination, I railed against it like nothing else. In the end, I had a C-section. The hard days of recuperation in the hospital were fraught with physical exhaustion, unprecedented amounts of wildly undesired drugs in my system and the cold, stone fer of brand-new parenthood. We were in the hospital the second day after our daughter was born and Shawn was encouraging me to walk around after having been sliced open against my will. My mother was in the room with our little girl, the staff had been trying to force-feed formula into her with about fifty kazillion samples of Enfamil that they threw in our faces every six seconds-- I was adamant to breastfeed-- and nurses were coming in around the clock to check my vitals and make sure I didn't get anything like rest (unheard of.)
Shawn was holding my arm as we walked around the hospital corridor. I had been a runner all of my life but those first, incredibly hard days of walking after surgery were surreal. I was literally taking baby steps. Shawn turned to me and said very simple words, "I am so proud of how hard you're trying." He knew I was heartbroken over the way things had come down because I had ranted against C-sections for the duration of the pregnancy. That moment, just learning how to walk again, with Shawn at my side, is forever burned on my heart.

What makes you different from other couples?
What makes us different from other couples, let's see. I think roles are slightly upturned in our relationship, but who knows? The division of labor in marriage is a very personal thing-- varying from couple to couple. But in our marriage, I handle all of the household finances, bill-paying, etc. and Shawn does at least half of the cooking, if not more. Bit non-traditional, perhaps? Lemme tell you, though, he is one bad-ass cook. The man makes me melt with the plates he sets before me on a regular old Sunday afternoon.

What is the most essential element of making it?
The 80/20 rule. In any relationship, there will be at least 20% about the other person you would change if you could. Screw that 20%-- leave it alone! Focus on the 80% that made you fall in love with that person. Practice acceptance. And if there's some small thing that is meaningful to that other person, even if it's not particularly meaningful to you, make a big deal out of it. Every year on my birthday, Shawn makes me cinnamon rolls with hot pink candles. It's something I asked for a long time ago and the guy just gets it done, year in and year out. It's something silly but it holds meaning for me, and he sees to it that I get my cinnamon rolls with hot pink candles. Sometimes, it's the simple things. Often it's the simple things.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
Just being in each other's presence. We get along really, really well. And smart people jokes. I mean the man has his doctorate in Physics, for criminy's sake! :)

Do you have a song?
This is funny because Shawn's taste in music and mine was so incredibly different when we first got married but it has sort of merged in some ways as the years have gone by. We don't have a song but I think we've constantly discovering stuff we both like since his taste is so eclectic. He's always burning CDs for me and I never know if I'm gonna pop the Doobie Brothers or Mike Patton or Queen with Paul Rodgers or Billy Joel in my car. For my birthday this year he bought me, among other things, a Beatles compilation-- which I found to be a really cool gift. Every day's an adventure--musically-- in our house.

What are your hopes for the future?
To keep doing what we've been doing. If I want to speak specifically, it's to ensure our daughter continues to thrive t home and at school and, for me, to get published. I have my eye on the prize as a career novelist and, bottom line, I would love to someday support his dream as he has supported mine. Shawn works in software development but his heart is in humanitarian efforts. If I were to someday be able to bring in the lion's share of our expenses through my writing, then he would be free to follow his heart. He's already enabled me to do that by supporting me as I've written and "perfected" a trilogy these last three years. I think a writer absolutely needs that kind of faith from a spouse. He's read every word I've written-- numerous drafts! I just want to do right by him as he's done by me.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
For some, it start out with a bang. For others, it starts out as a humble seed. If you water it, give it sunlight, foot rubs, laughter, traditions, imbue it with personal and sometimes private-- just between the two of you-- meaning, it grows into something you never would have expected: a beautiful life.

Real People in Love: Lindsay & Chris

Earlier this week I tweeted about my need for Real People in Love and I was overjoyed when the wonderful Lindsay from From the Aisle to Aloha responded. Lindsay is a military wife who is just about to get her hubby back!

How old are you and Chris?
We are both 25 years old. I'm always a year older than him for just two months, then he catches up to me. :)

How long have you been together?
We've been dating for almost five years! Next week is our five year dating anniversary.

When's your anniversary?
Our wedding anniversary is May 23rd. We just celebrated our two year anniversary!

What are your occupations?
I'm a full time blogger/artist and he is an officer in the Navy.

How did you meet?
Well, we first met probably in preschool Sunday School, but we don't remember that. Our families went to church together and then years down the road, we attended sister churches. So we hung out in similar circles and our youth groups did events together through high school. We met for real when we were about 16 years old. Chris had a mad crush on me and basically was in love with me for four years. Years later, we reconnected as we were both in our best friends' wedding (my best girl friend married his best guy friend!) I was so dense that he had to spell it out for me, I finally saw him with fresh eyes and he convinced me that I was, in face, in love with him too.

For more on Lindsay & Chris' dating story check it out here!

How did you get engaged?
I was in Acapulco, Mexico on a (very challenging) missions internship for about six months and Chris came down to visit me and encourage me during his spring break. When he got there, he told me he wanted to take me on a nice date that week, so he had me go shopping for a special dress and we picked out a restaurant on the water for dinner during sunset. He could barely finish his meal before he was dragging me (it felt like!) out of the restaurant and out onto the beach to watch the sunset. As we approached a big group of boulders, he had me ask a local man to take our picture. And then he had me ask him to take another, and as he did, Chris got onto his knee and asked me to marry him. I turned bright red, I was so surprised. We kissed as all the local Mexican families around us cheered "Beso! Beso!" (Kiss! Kiss!)

Read more here.

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
Our wedding was such a fabulous celebration. We called that whole week our "week of feasting" because Chris' birthday was on the 21st, his graduation and commissioning from the Naval Academy was the 22nd and our wedding was the 23rd. Every element of the wedding had some touch of our friends and family in it-- from the massive amounts of food that my mom prepared for the reception, my friend's brother DJing, my second cousin as the photographer, etc.

I will always remember dancing up a storm with everyone from my college girl friends, to Chris' grandma, the elders from church, and his Naval Academy buddies on the dance floor.

Define Love:
Love is a decision and commitment you make to put another person's desires, wants and needs about your own.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
For us, the hardest parts are the deployments. Of course, it's so hard to be apart from each other, but they also challenge us because we often have limited communication and they are stressful and if we aren't conscious of each other, it's so easy to hurt the other person's feelings. Times like those are the times I am incredibly thankful for a husband that I can trust wholly and confidently in every aspect.

What is the best part?
The best part is always having your best friend there. I'm getting giddy because he's coming home from his latest deployment very very soon and I get to have him back home with me again!! Woohoo!

What is the best day you and Chris have had together?
Wow, that's a tough question! Seriously, we have a million best days together. (Is that totally mushy and gross? Haha)

My favorite days are the ones when he wakes me up while it's still dark out and bundles me into the car, throws the boards on the roof and we drive up to the North Shore. He catches a "dawn patrol" surf session as I watch the sunrise over him while snuggled in my blanket on the beach. Once he comes in after the sun is up, we head to our favorite beach Walmea Bay Beach, snag an early morning parking spot and spend the rest of the day soaking in the sun and playing in the huge waves that crash on the shore. Then when we are tired and bronzed, we head home to dinner. That's a perfect day with Chris.

What makes you different from other couples?
We're opposites in so many things but sometimes I think we are the same person. Chris is pretty organized and logical, I'm "happy chaos" and definitely a "feeler." I'm artsy, he's a math mastermind. I hate most vegetables, he'd eat a 5 lb salad every day if he could. We share very strong, outgoing personalities and are both incredibly stubborn. And we both tell really dumb jokes. :)

What is the most essential element of making it?
Oh, I wouldn't say we've discovered the secret. But putting your spouse before yourself has got to be a top priority. And laughing together a lot. And probably eating ice cream together helps.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
We love surfing together. Chris is such a good encourager and I can't help but smile when I catch a wave and I hear him shouting "woooooohoooo!" from behind me in the water. And he couldn't be happier than when he's in the ocean, so I love seeing him just totally in his element. We even won a tandem surf competition surfing together last June!

Do you have a song?
Yep, Coldplay's "Til Kingdom Come." Chris sent that song to me over AIM (haha, remember that?) when we first started dating and told me that he would have waited forever for me. The first few chords of that song still make my heart jump when I hear them.

What are your hopes for the future?
Lots of babies. Maybe putting down some roots somewhere eventually, or maybe just traveling the world for a little while longer. Definitely lots more adventures. We're just ready for wherever God takes us.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
It's not always hunky-dory. Sometimes it's really hard, but love grows even in the hard times, through the fights and arguments. One of the best things I've heard is that it is not a 50-50 give and take, it's 100-100.

Real People in Love: Cole & Jus (again)

Since I missed Real People in Love yesterday I thought I would make up for it by reposting my answers here. I've changed what's applicable, but you can read my first version here and my second version here plus Jus's take on things here.

How old are you and Jus?
I'm 25 and Jus is 26, we're only the same age for 3 months and it just so happened that we got married during those 3 months. Also, I'm not very excited about turning 26 this year but that's a whole different story.

When's your anniversary?
We started dating June 9, 2007 and got married October 16, 2010.

What are your occupations?
Jus is operations manager at a street sweeping company and has a radio show and I'm a baker & waitress at my parent's restaurant and a part time wedding planner.

How did you meet?
The short answer is we went to middle school together.
So here's the long answer:
My parents live on a country road and when I was in high school people used to race their cars down it. One day my mom was driving me home from school and got to the end of the road and there were two kids (one was our neighbor, the other was Jus) getting ready to race. My mom (who went to racing school) said "I'm going to teach these kids a lesson" so she pulled around them and drove down the center of the road as slowly as possible. Our neighbor was on a motorcycle and sped past her, Jus, who was in a car, started to race her. When we got to the end of our road my mom said she was going to go to our neighbor's house to tell them how dangerous they were being but I was embarrassed and begged her to drop me off first. She went to the boy's house and ended up getting in a screaming match with Jus. They got in each other's faces and from then on Jus was known as "Trans-am boy."
We graduated high school and I went away to college but after two and a half years I got very sick and had to come home. I reconnected with a high school friend who was dating one of Jus's friends (later his best man). We all started hanging out and Jus and I became good friends. When we went out we always flirted and acted like we were together but I was never interested. Luckily for me Jus was patient and waited 9 months until I finally agreed to date him. The rest is history.

How did you get engaged?
(I posted this story right after we got engaged with some pictures of my ring but thought I'd share the story again)
Fridays are long days for me. I usually work at least thirteen hours so when I come home I just like to shower and zone out in front of the tv. All day I was a little worried about Jus because he said he had a stomach ache and I couldn't really get a hold of him. At the end of the night on Fridays all of my parent's employees sit together and eat dinner. My mom kept bugging us to get up and clean so we could go home but we were exhausted and moving extremely slowly.
When I got home Jus was in his guitar room, I went in and plopped myself down on the sofa complaining about how long my day was.
The Rolling Stones' Wild Horses came on and Jus got up and asked me if I wanted to dance (something we did pretty regularly). I said that I didn't really feel like it and so he asked again. I finally relented and got up to dance. I could feel Jus's hands shaking and was worried he was really sick.
While we were dancing he turned me around so my back was facing him and I felt him pull something out of his pocket. We kept dancing and he wrapped his arm around me again, opened his hand and asked me if I'd marry him. I started laughing hysterically and didn't say yes for 20 minutes!

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
Our wedding was amazing. The week before our wedding we spent finalizing all decorations & setting up so we would be done by the time out of town family arrived that Thursday. We had our rehearsal dinner at a local restaurant with all of our out of town family & friends and afterwards everyone came to the Behemoth so our loved ones could see the house we bought 20 days before the wedding.
The wedding day itself was gorgeous. I woke up in my childhood bed and got ready with my mom, Banan & my BFF Beth. Jus & I had our first look at my parent's house around one and the things he said to me in that moment are things I'll keep to myself until I tell my daughters on their wedding days.
We took pictures for a long time and then headed to the ceremony location. I was a crying mess that whole day so we have a lot of pictures of me making an ugly cry face.
Our guests were greeted with champagne and at 5:30 my dad & I walked down the aisle (crying the whole way) to Jus. Our ceremony was incredibly personal. Our parents read us letters giving us their blessings. Jus & I wrote our own vows and his were the best thing I've ever heard.
The best moment of the whole day followed the ceremony as Jus & I led a parade of our friends and family (and a brass band) down the street two blocks to the reception. I felt like I was absolutely floating as I walked down the street hand in hand with my new husband.
Our reception featured wonderful food and toasts. Our friends and families stayed until the wee hours dancing so much that at one point we were concerned we'd blow out the windows on the first floor of the building.
I spent the entire day engulfed in love and it was the absolute perfect way for Jus & I to start our life as a married couple.
(I feel silly telling you things without showing you pictures, I promise promise they're coming.)

Define Love:
Love is when someone makes you be a better version of yourself. You are happier, calmer, and more dynamic when you are with the right person. Love is wanting to share all of lifes ups and downs with one person.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
Remembering to communicate even when you don't want to. It took me a while to realize Jus wasn't a mind reader and it doesn't do me any good to get mad and not talk about it. You need to have open lines of communication so that resentment doesn't build up.
It's also important to remember to speak nicely to one another. Early in our relationship I used to get pretty heated when we would talk about "hot button" topics and would say things that weren't very nice. Jus called me on this a couple of times and I've tried my hardest to respect his opinions as much as he respects mine.
The thing we've dealt with most lately is letting outside stresses affect our relationship. With the stress of  living in a construction zone, working 40+ hours and starting my wedding planning business I've nagged & blamed Jus a lot. Sometimes it's hard to remember we're on the same team and going through the same things but it's so important to keep in mind.

What is the best part?
Having someone to go through life with. We've already experienced so much together and now we're at the beginning of our grown up lives, living in a grown up house with a world full of possibilities. Jus & I are such a solid team and rely on each other for so much that it's exciting to think of what our life will become.

What is the best day you and Jus have had together?
Our wedding day. I have never felt so incredibly happy as I did leading the parade to our reception (and Jus feels the exact same way).

What makes you different from other couples?
We enjoy each other. There is no one I'd rather spend time with than Jus. We fight when we don't get to spend enough time together. We laugh together all the time at the silliest things and have conversations that are amazing.
Lately I've also been thinking about how much growing up we've done together. While we weren't high school (or college) sweethearts we started dating when I was 21 and were very serious from the beginning. So basically, from the time we were 21 & 22 we have been committed to each other and all of our growing up experiences have been done with the other's love & support.
We're also crazy in the same way. Not many people would take on as big of a project as the Behemoth but Jus & I wouldn't have it any other way. We both take immense pride in our work and I know that one day the Behemoth will symbolize our hard work & love at the beginning of our marriage.

What is the most essential element of making it?
Communication. The hardest part of committing yourself to someone else is that they function differently than you do. Jus and I always try to talk through any disagreements and end our day with an "I love you." It doesn't do us any good to bottle up our frustration and anger.
Laughter is also important. My mom has always said laughter is the most important thing and l couldn't agree more. Nobody makes me laugh more than Jus does when he does his Edie voice and if I know Jus is mad I immediately start acting as goofy as possible to get him to laugh.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
Honestly, we almost do everything together and I love doing anything so long as Jus is next to me.
We love going to concerts and usually prefer to go with just the two of us rather than a group of people.

Do you have a song?
Originally our song was Bob Dylan's "Lay, Lady, Lay." I'd always loved this song and one night Jus said it should be our song. After that we said that the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" should be our song and it was playing when Jus proposed so now our song is "Wild Horses," our first dance as a married couple was to "Wild Horses," all 7ish minutes.

What are your hopes for the future?
To celebrate our 50th anniversary. To finish the Behemoth and know that we've put in the work to make it ours. To raise two kids in the Behemoth and give them the security of love that our parents gave us. To laugh together, hold hands and love being together when we are 80.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
You have to be willing to work to make it good. Being lazy or selfish in a relationship isn't love. Your relationship will only get better when you think of the other person before yourself and never keep tally of the times you have.

So there you have it, my third take on Real People in Love, it's kind of interesting to see how my answers have grown as our relationship has.

PS I'm extending the deadline for the Color Me Happy Package Exchange till Friday so if you'd still like to sign up shoot me an email!

Forgive me readers...

For I have sinned.

I lied about posting the other day. But you can trust me when I say that I'm just as ready as you are for our schedule to calm down and normalize into one in which blogging becomes part of my daily routine once again.

This won't be my normal Thursday roundup because today is something far more special, today is Jus & my four year dating anniversary.

Jus says our dating anniversary doesn't count now that we're married. I guess that means I'm not going to get a present. (Don't worry, I'm not going to rub in the fact that Jus got a computer & a guitar in the last month, well, not too much)

In all reality I think today is a pretty important one. I've gone over our story a bit before but I thought I'd fill all of my new readers in (Hello all you lovelies! I can't believe I'm getting so close to 400 followers!).

Our story begins in Middle School, where we were aware of each other but not friends. As high school dawned we were friends with a lot of the same people but didn't care for one another.

Then, one day in our sophomore year my mom was driving me home from school. As we pulled onto our road she noticed that two boys were getting ready to race their cars down the road. Thanks to some time in racing school my mom decided to teach these boys a lesson and outrace them, at the end of the mile my mom went to tell the boys how stupid it was for them to race. Rather than back down one boy argued back, and I'm sure you can see it coming that that boy is Jus and that this isn't the type of start you want in a relationship.

Fast forward five years and I was away at college until a severe illness sent me home where I reconnected with a high school friend that was dating Jus's best friend. Drunken nights at the bar resulted in friendship, which resulted in platonic sleepovers, a bad kiss, and Jus asking me out and me saying no.

Nine months later, after a bonfire at his parents Jus & I got talking and I decided that we should try to date and we haven't looked back.

Four years ago I was a girl that sat by Jus, kissed him for the (second) first time, and told him I wanted to try and date him. He was a guy that hesitantly allowed me back in after I had lead him on and didn't trust that my words would hold till morning.
Jus & me the summer we started dating

In the time that's resulted Jus has become the love of my life, my absolute best friend, and my favorite person to live, laugh & play with. We've traveled; bought a car; bought a home; lost a dog; got a puppy; got engaged; quit a job; bought another home; got married; got a new job; and started a business. And along the way we've laughed, cried, fought & learned more about each other & ourselves than we ever new before.

So even if today doesn't bring a present or a card (even though Jus got a computer & a guitar in the last month) it bring memories of what we've created over the last four years. A little family, in a big house with lots of love and laughter.

PS I really am cool with the fact Jus got a computer & guitar. He works hard & deserves them both.

Real People in Love: Tieka & Brett

Happy June, darlings! Can you believe we've already made it through half of 2011? Where oh where did the time go???

I'm not sure if I can convey my excitement over this week's Real People in Love.

Tieka is the beautiful woman behind Selective Potential and as I've been posting more and more of my outfit photos I look to her more and more for inspiration. I thought it would be fun to see another side of Tieka as well as more of her adorable hubby, Brett

How old are you & Brett?
I am 24 (almost 25, eep!), and Brett is 26 (almost 27, eep!)

How long have you been together?
We've been together for 5 years, married for 4 years! It's been the best 5 years of my life. I can't imagine spending my time with anyone else.

When's your anniversary?
August 12, 2007!

What are your occupations?
I work as an entry-level graphic designer for a strategic communications firm. Brett works as a shipping/receiving manager at a place that manufactures furniture parts for big companies like Herman Miller.

How did you meet?
Brett was in a band called 'The Potentials' and I kept seeing him play (he was the drummer). I liked him immediately... he had long, dark hair, supper tight dark jeans, a black t-shirt, and chucks! I stalked his shows, became friends with his friends, and we became friends! It was all downhill from there!

How did you get engaged?
It was the day before we received a HUGE snowstorm and it was the day that my engagement ring got into the store... he couldn't wait at all. :) We took a walk on the pier down to the lighthouse in our hometown and he proposed at the end of the pier. So cute.

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too):
It was seriously a whirlwind and one of the best days of our lives. Being surrounded by all of our closest friends and family as we told each other we would love each other for life was so amazing. We got married in our hometown of Grand Haven, had our reception at a little grand hall right downtown, took the trolley around, walked the pier. It was the perfect "us" day.

Define Love:
Everyone has a different interpretation, but my definition of love is having someone that is your best friend, that you can have fun with, laugh with, get through the every day stuff with and be stronger at the end of each day. Someone that supports you through your passions, you support them through theirs and everything comes out in the wash and you're happy.

What is the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
I think sometimes Brett and I struggled in our relationship because we married so young. Although I'd do it all overs again in a heartbeat, neither of us really had the chance to live on our own and really experience the 'adult single life.'

What is the best part?
It really helps us that we're still kids, still stay our super late with friends, still play in bands, go to shows. It's like we're living that young adult phase, but we're still married. It's really the best thing in our relationship- the ability to have fun, have our independence and be 'kids together' still.

What is the best day the two of you have had together?
I don't know if Brett would agree, but my favorite time with him ever was when we went up to the Upper Peninsula for our 3rd anniversary. It was so idealistic. We stayed in a lakefront hotel on Lake Superior and I just loved the breeze coming through as I heard the waves outside, there was this amazing old mission lighthouse in view and you could see Pictured Rocks perfectly. It was just...honestly, magical. Plus we were there celebrating an amazing anniversary.

What makes you different from other couples?
Definitely that we don't take ourselves seriously. We are honestly still kids... and sometimes I don't think people get that. We will still chase each other around our apartment with water squirt guns, jump on the bed, pick up and leave town and drive 8 hours to a difference city for the weekend, blow our entire savings on a cool vacation... we are so irresponsible (which we do need to work on) but we have FUN. That's huge to me! I see couples all the time that are stuck in a rut and it's boring... that could never be us!

What is your favorite thing to do together?
We love to ride our scooters together! We are always on them, riding past the lake, taking trips out to the city. We also love to go see every movie in the theater, eat way too much buttery popcorn and take corny adventures around our state. Everything I do is fun with him.

Do you have a song?
We do! It's Hot Rod Circut- At Nature's Mercy. When we first started dating, we both loved that band... and would just sing it to each other in the car. "Hard not to get hooked... hooked on you" and we'd point at each other on the 'you' part.

What is the most essential element of making it?
I think for us it's always staying on the same page. We're growing together, we're staying the same together. I see some couples that don't communicate, they get interested in things that doesn't involved the other and sometimes it can just make you grow apart. I'm HUGE into my fashion blog, but Brett is a huge part of it. He's constantly with me on outfit shoots, sitting beside me while I try and catch up on thousands of emails, reading my every post, correcting every grammatical error and giggling over cute reader comments. When Brett's band, Tall Ships, was huge and so busy and playing shows every weekend, I was at every single show. We support each other in everything we do- no matter how silly. I listened to his hardcore music a thousand times, he's taken my outfit shoes a thousand times. It's about sacrifice and enjoying each other's passions and supporting them.

What are your hopes for the future?
Our next step is to purchase a home. We've been trying to save for about a year now with no luck. Haha! As soon as we purchase a house, we'd love to buy a puppy! I'm thinking in five years or less we'll start having kids. We're so focused on other things right now and way too immature to have a baby so I know we'll be waiting a while there!

Real People in Love: Heidi & Chris

My going on and on about how much I love high school sweethearts must have really stuck because this week's Real People in Love have been together since high school. Heidi is the woman behind Run Around Aroo, a place where she blogs about her adventures in running.

How old are you & Chris?
I am 24, he is 26.

How long have you been together?
We've been dating since we were in High School (16 and 18) and married for just over two years.

When's your anniversary?
January 9th- dating (2003) and wedding (2009)

What are your occupations?
Well, I have a major in marketing and management but don't do it justice- I work in the travel industry. He is a computer network technician.

How did you meet?
High school... we had a big group of friends that hung out together and a lot of my girl friends dated his guy friends. We were the first of three of the couples to actually get married.

How did you get engaged?
We got the engagement on a bit of a whim. It stayed in our safe for 1.5 years before we told anyone about it. The night before I left to study abroad in South Korea for 2 months he asked if I'd like to wear "the ring." I told him if I was wearing it to South Korea he wasn't going to be getting it off my finger. It was a done deal.

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too):
Honestly, we had been "engaged" for three years, living together for four years and ready for this to be official. Or at least I was. The ceremony seemed to take forever (it was only 15 minutes!) I wanted to get done with the formal stuff, take some fun pictures in the snow (winter wedding in the Colorado Rockies) and then just hang out. I was not the blushing bride, I was the giddy, lets-make-this-official nutcase bride!

I think it all really hit home when his dad gave me a hug and said welcome to the family. His family is crazy (well, so is mine, but that doesn't count) and my mind went "holy crap, I have in-laws!"

Define Love:
Love is simple happiness. Happiness in being around the person. Happiness in knowing that he/she is always going to be there to hug you. Happiness in knowing that, even though he/she is driving you completely crazy, you will also enjoy their company to some extent. Happiness in knowing that you are both perfectly content spending a Sunday afternoon on the couch watching far too much Netflix. To us, love really is that feeling of true feeling of happiness and contentment.

Really, we have already hit the "old married couple" stage...
What is the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
Thinking about more than just yourself. And then when you realize it is not all about you the biggest challenge is thinking about the two of you without being resentful of the fact it isn't all about you.

When changing colleges this was hard for me-I could have spent a full year in South Korea if it was just me, but it wasn't. I had him to think about too. In the end I'd prefer to have just 2 months in South Korea and Chris to come home to!

What is the best part?
Someone is always there. I always have someone to depend upon to be honest with me, to love me for who I am, support my crazy whims and to listen to me whine and complain. And I do the same for him.

What is the best day the two of you have had together?
Honestly, I can't pick just one day. Not to be a gushy romantic (I'm not, promise!) but we have a lot of great days. I think some of our best days have been in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado snowboarding on massive mountains and just enjoying each other's company. Or mountain biking... being out in the middle of no where on a 90 degree day convinced this was the stupidest idea ever but still happy to be hanging out together.

What makes you different from other couples?
I have been told that we bicker a lot. I suppose we do, but it is not angry bickering. It is more of our way of communicating. It is not unusual for us to have a conversation that goes something like this...

"Let's go out for dinner, where do you want to go?"
"It's your idea, you pick."
"Yeah, but you are the picky eater, you pick."
"Fine, I pick Culver's."
"Ugh, you always pick Culver's... pick somewhere else."
"No, that is what I pick."
"Fine, we can just stay home!"

This all goes down as we are getting our stuff together to leave the house. We ened up going out to eat but it usually isn't the originally mentioned location. We are special like that!

What is your favorite thing to do together?
When the weather allows for it we like to go out snowboarding and mountain biking. When we are feeling extra lazy we have no problem sitting on the couch and bickering (see above) about what to watch.

Do you have a song?
Nope. We never really got around to that part of the relationship. We have songs that remind us of each other, but there is no "our song."

What is the most essential element of making it?
Communication. Hands down, communication.

I also say that it is important for a couple to know how to fight. Odd, but true. It is foolish to think you will never get into a fight. It is responsible to realize that everyone has their own tactics in an argument- you need to learn how the other person fights so you can have disagreements and then move on. It is an important part of communication. Not to encourage fighting or anything, but how do you have a discussion or debate without knowing the spatting tactics of the other person?

It took Chris and I a while to figure this out, but once we did we started to really talk more.

What are your hopes for the future?
Some people will talk about kids here... not us. At least not now. Right now we are really focusing on loving our lives, each other and taking in everything that we possibly can. Oh, and spoiling our poor cat rotten while continually threatening to get another.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?

It is out there. It doesn't always make sense, but it is out there. Love never makes sense... don't try to make sense of it, you'll drive yourself crazy! Also, you learn a lot about yourself while you are learning to love someone else!

My queue is empty so if  you'd like to participate in the Real People in Love series just shoot me an email!
