Hello, hello

Hello my loves.

Sorry to have cut out this weekend but I got an extra day off so we spent the long weekend at my parent's lake cabin. It was wonderful to have a weekend to unplug & relax.

Of course, unplugging leads to massively falling behind in the blog world so I apologize if I have an email to respond to or a blog to visit. Summer is such a busy time for us I can hardly stand it!

So I'll leave you with two pictures that sum up our weekend.

The first is a shaky picture of some fireworks (I'm still trying to figure out the secrets of my DSLR), we were fortunate enough to have two night of firework watching on my parents' boat. If you ever have the opportunity to watch fireworks on water I highly recommend it. The reflections are beautiful and the water makes every boom echo.

The second photo is pretty much the definition of how we spent our days at the lake. With temperatures topping 90 degrees it was hard not to spend the day in the water.

How was your Fourth of July weekend?

PS I wanted to remind you that all of your Color Me Happy packages should be sent & you should be receiving them within the next couple of days!

Hoppy Days

Happy Monday, darlings!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We spent the weekend hanging out with family, searching for Easter baskets and eating far too many Peeps, Starburst jellybeans & Whopper eggs.

Easter, along with most holidays, is full of tradition for my family. Every Easter the "bunny" leaves clues directing Banan & me on a scavenger hunt for our baskets.

Four years ago Jus got to hunt for his very first basket. Two years ago Jus got in on the fun and over the past two years he has complained & complained about having to work for his basket.

But how can he complain when we get goodies like this?

Do you get an Easter basket?

Roundup: Green

Happy St. Patrick's Day, loves!

The day after our wedding we were at my parent's house digging through the basement and I found our family's genealogy.

My whole life my paternal grandpa had been telling me I was Swiss-German. What I discovered on the genealogy is that while I am 1/8 German the other 3/8s that have come from my dad's side are Irish.

And thus, this is my first St. Patrick's Day as an Irish girl (in the same way I'd be excited if I found out that Edie was the Easter Bunny).

I thought it would be fun to have a little St. Patrick's Day roundup in honor of my new found Irish heritage :)

I imagine these earrings would swish when you walk.

I've been dying for a mustard skirt but I think a kelly green one might satisfy me for now.

Adorable for happy hour this summer!

Green has never been so glam.

Perfect for the painter or art school grad.

Adorable dress for summer and I imagine it would pair well with tights & a cardi in winter.

Add some green to your walls as well as your wardrobe.

Lovely pleats & bow!

Next to magenta green kitchen cabinets are my favorite.

A girl can never have too many scarves.

Beautiful sentiment & color.

True story, I squealed when I saw this beaut.

An adorable project for St. Patrick's Day or any spring day.

When our kitchen is complete I will get one of these to sit by my stove.

Add a pop of color to your house.

I'm ready for sandals, are you?

What's your favorite shade of green?

Love Day Hangover

No, Jus & I didn't drink 3 bottles of champagne and I didn't spend my night hovered over the toilet.

In fact, I spent the whole day so in love with my husband that I find it to be a little bit of a let down that Valentine's Day is over.

When I woke up I immediately knew I wanted to wear a red skirt, unfortunately for me the closet fairy hadn't visited and I had to compromise with red pants.

When I was younger my mom told me the only day I could wear red & pink together was Valentine's Day, so I had to oblige.

I decided to add red lips to top of my outfit and enjoyed leaving "kisses" on everything my lips touched.

Jus & I walked to lunch and sat enjoying each others company for a couple of hours.

After lunch Jus went to work on the Behemoth for a bit and let me off the hook. I went shopping and enjoyed the sunshine.

Jus & I met some of our friends for dinner at the local bar, nothing fancy, but we had fun getting together.

After dinner Jus & I danced in our bedroom and spent a lot of time snuggling while I whispered sweet nothings and he pretended to be asleep.

All in all our love day was lovely, how was yours?

Mushy Gushy Valentine

Hello again, darling! I'm back with my mushy, gushy Valentine's Day post about my amazing husband. (You didn't really think I could get through today without going on and on about how much I adore Jus, right?)

Dearest Jus,

I love you because you let me put my cold toes on your warm legs under the covers.

I love you because you let the dogs out before bed.

I love you because you always dance with me, at weddings, the bar, our living room, the car and our bedroom.

I love you because sometimes you don't want to get out of bed all day because you want to spend the day snuggling me.

I love you because when I throw a temper tantrum you remain calm (for the most part).

I love you because you think it's funny that I know words to pop songs.

I love you because you always let me have a bite even though you hate sharing your food.

I love you because when I said the Behemoth had to be ours you never seconded guessed me, and when I second guess the decision you remind me why we bought it.

I love you because you compliment my decorating skills by saying you need me to make our house look pretty.

I love you because you have taught me about so much good music.

I love you because you make me giggle, laugh & snicker more than anyone else.

Thank you for being my best friend, my lover and my life. To know that the ring on my finger binds me to you forever makes me giddy.

I love you forever, my darling.

Love, me

Happy Valentine's Day, Valentine!

Happy Valentine's Day, darlings!

I hope that love is reigning over you today.

There are many stigmas that surround today: it's a Hallmark holiday; only couples celebrate it; it's a day for cheesy, mushy & gushy couples to make out in public.

I've never subscribed to any of these thoughts, though. Yes, I love Jus with all of the mushiness & gushiness that is in my body but I also think that Valentine's Day is a day to think about everyone you love. Love is so universal and can be felt in so many ways that it seems silly to only celebrate romantic love on Valentine's Day. Jus loves me but the rest of my heart is full of love from my family & friends.

Just in case you don't have a Valentine today Happy Valentine's Day! Thank you for being in my life and for making me feel loved each & every day.

So grab yourself some chocolate, champagne & flowers; make yourself a bubble bath; and dance around your living room in your prettiest dress cause you are loved!

And just in case you were wondering where all of the mushy, gushy love for Jus check back later.

Real People in Love: Cole & Jus (Cole's Perspective)

As promised here are my responses, I hope you aren't super bored of my ramblings about our life.

How old are you and Jus?
I'm 24 and Jus is 25, he's 9 months older than me so he was in the world before I was a thought.

What are your occupations?
Jus works at his family friend's factory and I work at my parent's restaurant. We're both itching to do something else. Hopefully we'll have our own business soon, we're ready for it.

How did you meet?
The short answer is we went to middle school together.
So here's the long answer:
My parents live on a country road and when I was in high school people used to race their cars down it. One day my mom was driving me home from school and got to the end of the road and there were two kids (one was our neighbor, the other was Jus) getting ready to race. My mom (who went to racing school) said "I'm going to teach these kids a lesson" so she pulled around them and drove down the center of the road as slowly as possible. Our neighbor was on a motorcycle and sped past her, Jus, who was in a car, started to race her. When we got to the end of our road my mom said she was going to go to our neighbor's house to tell them how dangerous they were being but I was embarrassed and begged her to drop me off first. She went to the boy's house and ended up getting in a screaming match with Jus. They got in each other's faces and from then on Jus was known as "Trans-am boy."
We graduated high school and I went away to college but after two and a half years I got very sick and had to come home. I reconnected with a high school friend who was dating one of Jus's friends. We all started hanging out and Jus and I became good friends. When we went out we always flirted and acted like we were together but I was never interested. Luckily for me Jus was patient and waited 9 months until I finally agreed to date him. The rest is history.

How did you get engaged?
(I posted this story right after we got engaged with some pictures of my ring but thought I'd share the story again)
Fridays are long days for me. I usually work at least thirteen hours so when I come home I just like to shower and zone out in front of the tv. All day I was a little worried about Jus because he said he had a stomach ache and I couldn't really get a hold of him. At the end of the night on Fridays all of my parent's employees sit together and eat dinner. My mom kept bugging us to get up and clean so we could go home but we were exhausted and moving extremely slowly.
When I got home Jus was in his guitar room, I went in and plopped myself down on the sofa complaining about how long my day was.
The Rolling Stones' Wild Horses came on and Jus got up and asked me if I wanted to dance (something we do pretty regularly). I said that I didn't really feel like it and so he asked again. I finally relented and got up to dance. I could feel Jus's hands shaking and was worried he was really sick.
While we were dancing he turned me around so my back was facing him and I felt him pull something out of his pocket. We kept dancing and he wrapped his arm around me again, opened his hand and asked me if I'd marry him. I started laughing hysterically and didn't say yes for 20 minutes!

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
As of now it's just a lot of plans and dreams. My hope for the day is that all of our guests will understand how deep our love is and why we are together. AND that we will have a kick ass party.

Define Love:
Love is when someone makes you be a better version of yourself. You are happier, calmer, and more dynamic when you are with the right person.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
Remembering to communicate even when you don't want to. It took me a while to realize Jus wasn't a mind reader and it doesn't do me any good to get mad and not talk about it. You need to have open lines of communication so that resentment doesn't build up.
It's also important to remember to speak nicely to one another. Early in our relationship I used to get pretty heated when we would talk about "hot button" topics and would say things that weren't very nice. Jus called me on this a couple of times and I've tried my hardest to respect his opinions as much as he respects mine.

What is the best part?
Having someone that understands me. There are so many times I'll look at Jus and know he's thinking the same silly thing as me.
The other best thing is having someone that can make you calm down and smile just by hugging them. There are sometimes I'll hug Jus for five minutes just because he calms me down that much.

What is the best day you and Jus have had together?
It's hard for me to just pick one, but one of my favorite days falls in my favorite weekend which is also my favorite vacation. Five months after we started dating I took Jus to my grandparent's cabin in the middle of the woods in Northern Michigan. I knew he would love the seclusion and this was the first time that we were away together. While we were there the weather was really rainy so we weren't able to take any hikes, we stayed in the cabin burning fires, reading, napping, and listening to tapes of Garrison Keilor's Lake Wobegon.
After we were there for a couple of days we were getting cabin fever (haha, lame, I know) so I decided to take Jus over the Mackinac bridge. There is a food called pasties that were brought to Northern Michigan by the Polish immigrants that built the Mackinac bridge. Pasties are a flaky dough pocket filled with sirloin, potatoes, onion, and rutabaga (I've been meaning to make them for a while) I knew Jus would like them and I was so excited to take him there.
The day was grey and rainy, we drove over the bridge, stopped and got pasties and then decided to continue driving north and drove up the highway to Whitefish Point which juts into Lake Superior. We listened to the Counting Crows on the way there and when we got to Whitefish Point the sun was shining. It was one of those days that is just perfect.

What makes you different from other couples?
We enjoy each other. There is no one I'd rather spend time with than Jus. We fight when we don't get to spend enough time together. We laugh together all the time at the silliest things and have conversations that are amazing.

What is the most essential element of making it?
Communication. The hardest part of committing yourself to someone else is that they function differently than you do. Jus and I always try to talk through any disagreements and end our day with an "I love you." It doesn't do us any good to bottle up our frustration and anger.
Laughter is also important. My mom has always said laughter is the most important thing and lately I've been agreeing. Nobody makes me laugh more than Jus does when he does his Edie voice.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
Honestly, we almost do everything together and I love doing anything so long as Jus is next to me.
We really enjoy going out to eat. When we started dating we both lived at home so the only time we could really be alone was when we went out to eat. We still go out to eat a lot (way more than we should) and sometimes we make silly rules like we have to try something new.

Do you have a song?
Originally our song was Bob Dylan's "Lay, Lady, Lay." I'd always loved this song and one night Jus said it should be our song. After that we said that the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" should be our song and it was playing when Jus proposed so now our song is "Wild Horses," it's the song we'll dance to for our first song.

What are your hopes for the future?
To celebrate our 50th anniversary. To have two kids. To own our own business. To laugh together, hold hands and love being together when we are 80.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
You have to be willing to work to make it good. Being lazy or selfish in a relationship isn't love. Your relationship will only get better when you think of the other person before yourself.

Real People in Love: Jus & Cole (Jus's Perspective)

As I was reading the responses from the guest bloggers I couldn't wait to participate myself, and then I thought that it might be fun to read responses from both Jus & I. So here's Jus & Cole from Jus's perspective*, stay tuned for my perspective.

How did you get engaged?
I proposed while we were dancing to Wild Horses.

Tell us about your wedding day (not necessarily elements but feelings too)
Well, we haven't had it yet, but I think it will be the best day of my life.

Define Love:
True love is the soul's recognition of its counterpoint in another. (Note from Cole: Since I knew this was from Wedding Crashers does that mean we're soul mates?)

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
Learning to listen, learn, laugh, cry, share and work as a single entity of love.

What is the best part?
Knowing you will be loved and supported unconditionally for the rest of your life.

What is the best day you and Cole have had together?
The Friday we spent together at Rothbury was pretty special.

What makes you different from other couples?
Our souls are completely in sync with one another.

What is the most essential element of making it?
Loving, being loved, sharing love, and growing in love.

What is your favorite thing to do together?
Go to concerts.

Do you have a song?
Wild Horses-Rolling Stones

What are your hopes for the future?
To be healthy and happy

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
It's proof of all that is good.

*Isn't it funny how short and concise Jus's answers are compared to the ladies I've featured? Silly boy.

Real People in Love: Olivia & Tyler

I was so excited when Olivia Rae from Everyday Musings agreed to participate in this series. The insight I have gotten from the bloggers in this series has been wonderful, Olivia and Tyler have such a sweet relationship and I am so excited to share it with you. (And the crying monster almost got me when I was looking at the pictures of these two.)

How old are you and Tyler and how long have you been together?
Tyler is 24 and I'm 20 and we've been together for about two years. We don't have an exact anniversary! We always try to make one up but it never sticks.

What are your occupations?
I'm a student at the College of Charleston and I work part-time at Cupcake, a cupcake bakery (obviously). Tyler works at the cutest restaurant in Charleston called Five Loaves, and also at a non-profit called Darkness to Light (working to end and prevent child sexual abuse).

How did you meet?
Tyler worked at a restaurant next door to Cupcake (where I work). He came in for a red velvet cupcake and shamelessly flirted with me. Then I went to the restaurant where he worked and shamelessly flirted with him.

Define Love:
Caring about someone else as much as you care about yourself. Someone you always have things to talk about with and someone you would trust with your life.

What's the toughest part of being in a committed relationship?
I'm guilty of taking things out on Tyler that have nothing to do with him, because he's my family in Charleston.

What is the best part?
He's my family.

What is the best day you and Tyler have had together?
We have already made a million amazing memories together, but I love the days where we don't do anything significant, but just feel happy and enjoy each others company. We also love traveling together and have had some great times in Chicago, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee... and Europe this summer!

What is your favorite thing to do together?
We love to ride bikes, go out to eat, TRAVEL, cook dinner and hang out at home, watch back-to-back episodes of The Office and Flight of the Concords, go bakery-scouting, pretend like we live in France, etc...

Do you have a song?
Well there are a thousand songs that remind me of Tyler but Sigur Ros is "our band." We discovered the first night we met that we shared a love/obsession for them. We have also been to Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza together (twice), and have so many wonderful concert memories together.

What are your hopes for the future?
I just want to be happy. Cliche but true, it's really all that matters...although I'd love to live in Paris and San Francisco... and write and bake for the rest of my life.

Anything else the world needs to know about love?
I'm no expert! But I think the most important thing is being with someone who you love to be around and can make you laugh till you cry. You should be with your best friend!
